Double Layers and Plasma-wave Resistivity in Extragalactic Jets: Cavity Formation and Radio-wave Emission

چکیده

For estimated values of the currents carried by extragalactic jets, current-driven electrostatic-waveand electromagnetic-wave-produced resistivities do not occur. Strong plasma double layers, however, may exist within self-maintained density cavities, the relativistic double-layer-emitted electron, and ion beams driving plasma-wave resistivities in the lowand high-potential plasma adjacent to the double layers. The double-layer-emitted electron beams may also emit polarized radio waves via a collective bremsstrahlung process mediated by electrostatic twostream instabilities.

The radio flaring behaviour of GRO J 1655 − 40 : an analogy with extragalactic radio sources ?

At radio frequencies, the current evidence for the microquasar–quasar connection is based on imaging observations showing that relativistic outflows/jets are found in both classes of objects. Some microquasars also display superluminal motion, further strengthening the view that microquasars are in fact Galactic miniatures of quasars. Here we demonstrate that this connection can be extended to ...

Extragalactic Relativistic Jets and Nuclear Regions in Galaxies

Substantial progress achieved during the past decade in studies of active galactic nuclei (see [25] for a review of recent results) has brought an increasingly wider recognition of the ubiquity of relativistic outflows (jets) in galactic nuclei [5, 43] turning them into an effective probe of nuclear regions in galaxies [21]. Emission properties, dynamics, and evolution of an extragalactic jet a...

On the centrifugally driven electrostatic instability in extragalactic jets

The stability problem of the rotation induced electrostatic wave in extragalactic jets is presented. Solving a set of equations describing dynamics of a relativistic plasma flow of AGN jets, the instability rate has been derived and estimated for typical values of extragalactic jets. The growth rate was analyzed versus the wave length and inclination angle and it has been found that the instabi...

Superdisks in Radio Galaxies: Jet–Wind Interactions

Taking a clue from their sharp-edged (strip-like) morphology observed in several cases, a new mechanism is proposed for the formation of the emission gaps seen between the radio lobes of many powerful extragalactic double radio sources. Canonical understanding of the radio gaps invokes either blocking of the back-flowing lobe plasma by the denser interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy, or...

On the Formation of Jets

The phenomenology of jets associated with a variety of black hole systems is summarized, emphasizing the constraints imposed on their origin. Models of jet formation are reviewed, focusing in particular on recent ideas concerning MHD models. Finally, the potential for advancing our understanding of jets both through future observations – especially forthcoming X–ray missions – and for elucidati...
